US Labor Department Leaders to Discuss New Safety and Health Training Grants

U.S. Deputy Secretary of Labor Chris Lu and Assistant Secretary of Labor for Occupational Safety and Health Dr. David Michaels will discuss today’s award of $10.5 million in federal safety and health training grants to 80 nonprofit organizations across the nation, during a media teleconference at 1 p.m. EDT. A question-and-answer session will follow.

Among those awarded grants are five organizations focused on outreach to vulnerable nail salon workers.

The one-year grants are funded by the Susan Harwood Training Grant Program, which funds workplace safety and health grants to nonprofit organizations, including community/faith-based groups, employer associations, labor unions, joint labor/management associations, colleges and universities. Target trainees include small-business employers and underserved vulnerable workers in high-hazard industries.
